Surrealism has never really trended in website design, but we certainly did have a spate of ‘floating islands’. Using elements from nature to create surreal imagery is not an easy task, therefore, this round-up is not huge! The most common uses for surrealism using nature’s elements are food and drink websites, but not exclusively so, as you will see from the examples included here.
Surrealism is defined as featuring the element of surprise, unexpected juxtapositions and non sequitur. There are really no hard and fast rules on what is or isn’t surreal art, but it is basically the opposite of ‘real’ art, therefore, something you wouldn’t expect to see – although surreal images do appear occasionally in natural elements – particularly in cloud formations. In this compilation, there are mostly manipulated surreal images using nature elements, but there are a couple of natural images included.
Surreal Imagery Using Nature Elements in Web Design
Conclusion
I hope you agree with me that these examples feature extremely inspirational imagery. Do you agree that all of these images are surreal? It is a subjective subject, and although I am sure art masters would be able to definitively state if these are surreal or not, for most of us lay people it is somewhat in the eye of the beholder.
