It is difficult to find a trustworthy party. However be very selective with anyone you ar going to go in to business with. My haste in these matters led to me starting up a business incorrectly as a Partnership and not as a LTD, an evetually lost the business due to my then partners business practices. I eventually got slapped with a £200k bill that took two years to clear up.

However my new business partner is a polar opposite and has detailed knowledge of business technicalities and ha steered us through some area that felled many small studios.

All very good advice. Perhaps some may not really appreciate the true value of these insights. having tried several times to start a design studio from graphics, through the birth of the web on my own was always exhilarating but very challenging.

My first success came when I partnered up with others, no necessarily creative people and delegated responsibility to our respective strengths in sales, accounts, creative and project management. Although sometimes a volatile atmosphere we experienced very rapid growth and success.. You may want to mention at some point that too rapid growth can also be fatal - which it was. it was surprising how a bit of money can change people.

The formula that worked for me came after this situation of rapid growth as I gave up my interest and decided try again on my own, with just one sales partner. Our experience in previous vocations was critical, as was our experience in recruiting. I must warn people now starting up in business, recruiting is possibly the most critical decision to the success of company, never employ someone based on just your opinion of them, or just the strength of their portfolio. We have a 3 prong process 1. a face to face SWOT analysis. 2. the interview is recorded via iPhone for a bit of on the spot pressure, 3. both recording and questionnaire are sent to two other trusted parties for their opinion, and then a decision is made for a second interview.

feel free to contact me and I will share my many nuggets of information, and hopefully help you avoid the start-up pitfalls, and there are MANY!
